WHAT CAUSES A STYE
A stye, an inflamed swelling on the edge of an eyelid, happens as a result of an acute infection of the secretory glands of the eyelids.
A stye, or hordeolum, is caused when staphylococcal bacteria infects the root follicle of an eyelash. When infection occurs, the gland in the eyelid becomes inflamed, plugged, and triggers a stye.
Factors that can bring about a stye include poor eyelid hygiene, inflammatory eyelid diseases, and environmental conditions.

POOR EYELID HYGIENE CAN CAUSE A STYE
Cleanliness is key in maintaining eyelid health and preventing styes. The bacterium staphylococcus resides normally on the skin. When these microorganisms enter a mucous membrane or eyelid gland, it causes a pus formation. By rubbing your eyes with unwashed hands, you risk transferring the microscopic organisms to your eyelids.
Cleaning the eyelids with sterile lid scrubs can lower your risk of developing a stye. Lid scrubs are individually wrapped, pre-moistened pads, used to clean and remove bacteria and debris from the upper and lower folds that cover the eye when closed (eyelids).
INFLAMMATORY EYELID DISEASE CAUSES STYES
Inflammatory eyelid diseases, such as blepharitis, can give rise to a stye. Blepharitis occurs when small oil glands at the base of the eyelash become blocked. When bacterium forms at the base of an eyelash hair follicle, it can produce a stye.
Blepharitis is often associated with underlying conditions, such as rosacea, seborrheic or dermatitis, a skin condition characterized by facial redness. By following good eyelid hygiene, you can help prevent styes from occurring.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS CAN CASUE A STYE
Styes can arise from changes in a persons surroundings. For example, prolonged viewing of a computer screen can lead to dry eye conditions, and subsequently, cause styes to form. Poor nutrition, sharing infected cosmetics, and incomplete removal of makeup are other examples of environmental conditions.
Certain medications can also cause dry eyes, such as hormone replacement therapy. Other medications that cause dry eyes include:

- Certain drugs use to treat high blood pressure.

- Decongestants and Antihistamines
- Isotretinoin-type drugs for the treatment of acne.
Dry eye syndrome is caused by an imbalance in the tear composition, the lubrication responsible for moisturizing the surface of your eyes.
Dry eyes results in a lack of lubrication, and also affects the quality of the tears (not to be confused with emotional tears). They help to help washout debris, dust and help neutralize microorganisms that colonize the eye.
When there’s a lack of proportion in tear mixture, the lacrimal gland or associated glands can become dysfunctional, become inflamed, and prone to stye infections.
